Break Rule

Frozen Ball Specifics

Frozen-ball safeties are common and familiar.

If frozen ball is hit first, you must still get pot/rail outcomes defined in rule or it is a foul.
Do this: Avoid soft frozen taps unless you can name the legal outcome in advance.
Who Breaks Each Frame

Winner of each game breaks next.
IEB
Strictly alternating after frame 1.
Do this: Expect to break every other frame regardless of wins.
Coaching

1–2 time-outs per game; designated coach may advise during time-out.
IEB
Any advice from anyone during a frame = warning then standard foul on the player.
Do this: Say nothing to a teammate while they're at the table.
Penalty Tiers

All fouls = ball-in-hand anywhere (8-ball break scratch: behind head string).
IEB
Three levels: Loss of Turn (cue stays), Standard Foul (ball in hand), Loss of Frame.
Do this: Know which tier your mistake falls into.
8-Ball Off the Table

Automatic loss of game.
IEB
Standard foul; 8-ball is re-spotted.
Do this: In IEB you survive a knocked-off 8; in APA you don't.
Pocket Marking (8-Ball)
APA
Must physically mark intended pocket with a coaster before shooting 8.
IEB
No call or marker needed at all.
Do this: Skip the marker in IEB; don't forget it in APA.
